In a recent posting, he presented President Obama with ten ideas for how to change education:

  1. Shut down high schools
  2. Stop preparing students for college
  3. Stop insisting everyone go to college
  4. Re-focus colleges away from academics
  5. Eliminate all testing
  6. Get big business out of education
  7. Make learning fun again
  8. Let children choose what they want to learn about
  9. Help children find mentors who will help them learn what they want to learn
  10. Build online experiences that engage students and that teach thinking skills

Dr. Schank was awarded a Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of Texas in Austin. He founded the renowned Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University in 1989 where he is John P. Evans Professor Emeritus in Computer Science, Education and Psychology. A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air, Inc. has now partnered with EnergyUpgradeCA

A-1Guaranteed Heating & Air Inc. has some exciting news for customers.

Richard and Krissy Hiteshaw, owners of the company since 1996, said A-1 Guaranteed has partnered with EnergyUpgradeCA, a program created to help reduce energy usage throughout the state by offering incentives to homeowners for a limited time.

These incentive packages encourage homeowners to take a "whole house" approach by combining several related improvements at once to increase a home's overall energy efficiency - and to achieve greater savings.

By working with participating contractors, homeowners can choose from two incentive options, the Basic Upgrade Package or the Advanced Upgrade Package, based on their improvement needs and budget.

This program lets A-1 Guaranteed offer the following: Energy Upgrade California, $4,200, and Energy Upgrade California for Contra Costa County $5,000.

Also available are federal tax credits ($500), CHF grants ($1,950), and financing rates from 0-3 percent.

Company President Richard Hiteshaw has recently received his B (General) Contractors license in addition to his existing C20 license, which "has made it possible for us to be a participating contractor with the EnergyUpgradeCA program," said Krissy Hiteshaw, vice president.

A-1 Guaranteed also is Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified, Krissy said. "When you use a BPI-certified professional, you get a member of the elite - someone who has proven that they have the knowledge and skills to diagnose the root cause of the problems in your house, and the ability to provide solutions to fix it right the first time," she said.

"That means you get your money's worth - a comfortable, safe, durable home with improved indoor air quality and lower energy bills.

"At A-1 Guaranteed, we take a house as a system approach to all our HVAC and retrofit work. As prescribed and recommended by the Building Performance Institute, our process concentrates on indoor air quality, safety, energy savings and true comfort.

"We are a Certified Green Company, Certified Recycler, Diamond Certified, Nate Certified, and have won "Best of Solano County for seven years and KRON4 'Best of the Bay' for two years," Krissy said.

A-1 Guaranteed offers a five-year parts and labor warranty on any new install, as well as 100 percent customer satisfaction, Krissy said.

"If for any reason within the first one year, you are not 100- percent satisfied with your new system, we will make it right or we will remove the system and gladly refund 100 percent of your investment."

In addition to air-conditioning and heating services, A-1 offers air purification systems that help those with allergies, asthma and other breathing issues, Krissy said. Clean Effects, a wholehouse cleaner that removes more than 90 percent of the allergens is a home's air, is a product the Hiteshaws have put in their own home because two of their children suffer from allergies.

Even when they have horrible days outdoors, Krissy said, the children can go inside - and thanks to Clean Effects, their symptoms pretty much disappear.

Krissy said A-1 Guaranteed is a family business that puts customers first. "If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be here," she said.

A-1 Guaranteed also believes in community involvement. The company's staff volunteers at several events in the community: Helping to rebuild homes with the nonprofit Rebuilding Together, donating turkeys to the Christian Help Center, and volunteering to serve breakfast to middle schoolers at the Breakfast Club.

"We've been blessed by the community," Krissy said. "We want to give back."

A-1 also is Vallejo's First Certified Green Company. "We really try to go that extra mile," Krissy said.

The business started when Richard, who worked in the heating and air conditioning sector growing up, decided to open his own business, starting in their garage and building the company for the past 15 years. They now have 23 employees.

A-1 Guaranteed is located at 1768 Broadway in Vallejo. Business hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 645-0734

Ms. Krissy Hiteshew
A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air, Inc.
1768 Broadway
Vallejo, CA 94589

Dear Ms. Hiteshew:

Congratulations on becoming certified as Solano County’s 6th Green Business!

The Bay Area Green Business Program (Program) certifies the environmental performance of small-to-medium size businesses and government agencies that volunteer to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. Certification requires 1) compliance with all federal, state and local regulations and 2) meeting Program standards for conserving energy and water, preventing pollution and minimizing waste. Certification is also based on a per site basis.

The Program was developed in 1996 by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and Bay Area public agencies through a grant provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 9. The Program’s industry-based checklists were created with input from Cal EPA, California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), local Certified Unified Program Agencies (CUPA) and the small business community. ABAG coordinates the Program, which is implemented by Green Business Coordinators in the nine participating Bay Area counties.

The Program provides businesses with consolidated information and technical assistance on:
Complying with environmental regulations (including those pertaining to air quality, wastewater discharge, storm water management, chemical storage and handling, and hazardous waste management); and going beyond compliance to adopt environmentally-sound practices in four areas - energy efficiency, water conservation, solid and hazardous waste reduction, and pollution prevention.

Today, A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air, Inc. in Vallejo officially receives these distinctions after the agency inspectors representing the following completed their on-site audit and confirmed the Program Standards had been met in their respective category:

  1. Energy Conservation: Small Business Energy Alliance, Ryan Porter
  2. Pollution Prevention: Vallejo Sanitation & Flood Control District, Jennifer Kaiser
  3. Water Conservation: City of Vallejo Water Division, Roger Judy
  4. Waste Reduction/Recycling: Vallejo Garbage Service, Lisa Lefebvre, Recycling Coordinator

Solano County is delighted to have A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air, Inc. - Vallejo join the growing number of nearly 2,000 small businesses throughout the Bay Area that have successfully met the Green Business Program standards and proudly display a window decal of the Green Business logo that is marketed so consumers can identify the environmentally responsible businesses.

Please look forward to an invitation to a Solano County Board of Supervisors meeting where your business will be publicly recognized and presented with a Solano County Green Business certificate by your district’s representative, Supervisor Barbara Kondylis.

Sincerely,
Narcisa Untal
Green Business Coordinator
